International School Of Budapest: To IB Or Not To IB? That Is The Question
By ISB Principal John Hart And ISB Vice Principal High School Vera Kováts. Our school, the International School of Budapest is a constantly growing school. Its high school programme was launched in 2017 with only 9 students. Now we have over 50 students from grade 9 to grade 11 (DP1).

As the high school grew, the time came when we had to make a really crucial decision. Should the school be just another high school where students obtain the ’usual” high school diploma, or consider the option of becoming an IB World School. There were a range of factors to consider.

We decided that the IB Diploma Programme would be perfect for our students. The programme focuses on developing an international mindset, encourages and supports the students to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective.

The IB Diploma programme is great at encouraging a ’global outlook’, and it offers its students a much greater educational emphasis upon individual initiative, responsibility, imagination and problem-solving, all skills which future employment will require. It is also accepted as an entry qualification by universities across the entire world.

Being an international school, we meet a myriad of different characters as students, and we face new challenges as teachers when we start working with them.

One thing is common with these students though, they each have the potential of becoming great. And greatness can come in many different forms.

Great knowledge and academic excellence is just one of them. Furthermore, the IB Diploma programme positively encourages the development of a strong social awareness and conscience in students, in addition to developing a strong global outlook.

Our mission at the High School of the International School of Budapest is that we work with our students towards a goal upon which we both agree, we let them explore their options, and we help them achieve their dreams.

We do not just want to prepare them for the IB examinations and for success at university, but we would also like to prepare them for the rapidly changing and increasingly challenging world which they will enter as adults. And the IB Diploma Programme is perfect for that as it offers a great educational emphasis upon individual initiative, responsibility, imagination and problem solving – all skills which future employment will require.
