QPR Properties is working with Marriott to redevelop the Drechsler Palace, which will be fully converted to a five-star hotel by 2022, Portfolio reports.

The facility opposite the Opera House on Andrássy út will be the first W hotel in Hungary, a Marriot luxury lifestyle brand targeting the younger generation.

Building services group DVM has begun the reconstruction of the Neo-Gothic, French Renaissance-style building designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos in the 1880s, which for a time was home to Hungary’s Ballet Institute, but has sat unused for two decades.

DVM’s references include the Eiffel Palace, the Ybl Villa, the US embassy and the Bank of China building in Budapest.

The company will work to restore the 16,000m2 palace under cultural heritage protection to its original form with ground-breaking engineering and electrical features.

The hotel will feature a restaurant and bar, an Away Spa, a FIT fitness centre and a WET pool.
