Hungary in 2020 became the first foreign sovereign issuer to enter the Japanese yen green bond market, Varga said on Facebook.

Green bonds accounted for one-third of the 500 million euro samurai bond issue, he noted, adding that proceeds from the issue are to be used to finance various environmentally-friendly investments.

The bond issue also recently won accolades from the Japanese financial press and a research institute, the minister said.
