Hungary’s government has launched an investigation following claims that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó may have been targeted in a surveillance operation involving foreign intelligence services and a Hungarian journalist.
The Kremlin has endorsed a covert influence operation aimed at bolstering Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán ahead of April’s parliamentary elections, according to reporting by the Financial Times on 11 March 2026.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has effectively issued a death threat against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, declared at a public forum on Thursday in Sopron. "But Hungary cannot be blackmailed, no matter what threats are made," he said, adding that Zelensky had gone "beyond all limits".
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Budapest on Sunday, where he was welcomed at Liszt Ferenc International Airport by Levente Magyar, parliamentary state secretary at the foreign ministry.
