Vaccinations Mandatory for Healthcare Workers in Hungary
Healthcare workers must receive the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine by September 1 or face dismissal, under a decree published on the weekend.

The rationale is that healthcare workers are at increased risk of infection and can spread the virus.

The decree states that “vaccination is mandatory for all healthcare workers who have not yet been vaccinated, including healthcare workers in primary care, outpatient specialist care, hospitals, ambulances, pharmaceutical care and diagnostics, as well as orderlies and healthcare workers employed by a private healthcare provider. In addition, vaccination is mandatory for employees of social care institutions.”

Healthcare providers may not hire healthcare professionals who are not vaccinated and must terminate employment with any healthcare professional who refuses to take the vaccine.

In addition, employers may check the vaccination status of healthcare staff.

For nearly forty years, suicide rates in Hungary were on a consistent decline. However, a recent alert from the Hungarian Medical Chamber (MOK) suggests this progress has stalled. According to MOK, the downward trend broke in 2019, marking a turnaround not seen since the 1980s. The figures are stark: Hungary now averages one suicide every six hours.
