180,000 Refugees in Hungary from Ukraine to Date
An estimated 180,000 people have entered Hungary from Ukraine from the first day of the Russian invasion until Monday afternoon, Népszava reports.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said this number might rise dramatically, if the war moves closer to the Hungarian border.

Ernő Simon, spokesman of the Central European office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, told Népszava by phone from Moldova on Monday that “We know how many are coming, but we have less data about how many of the refugees have remained here, or moved on, as Hungary is the outer border of the Schengen zone, and anybody who enters will no longer be registered upon departure”.

He recalled that the European Council passed a resolution a few days ago on the provisional protection of Ukrainian refugees, granting them the same rights as EU citizens: they can have access to residence permits, the labour market, accommodation, medical services and education. This protection is now for one year but it can be extended twice for one year.
