800th Anniversary of 'The Golden Bull' - A Defining Relic of Hungary’s History
The 800th anniversary of the Golden Bull of 1222, an edict that established constitutional limits on the power of monarchs, was observed in Székesfehervár, in the northwest of Hungary, on Sunday.

Constitutional Court head Tamás Sulyok and Kuria head András Zs Varga joined Szekesfehervar mayor András Cser-Palkovics laying a wreath at a memorial on a hill from where, as tradition holds, the Golden Bull was proclaimed.

Sulyok called the Golden Bull “a defining relic of our history and constitutional identity”.

Varga said the Golden Bull remains a “valid and compulsory source for interpreting the constitution”.

The Golden Bull, issued by King András II on April 24, 1222, established the rights of the nobility and served as a pillar of Hungary’s legal system for centuries.
