New Heat Record on 17 August in Hungary
August 17 was the hottest on record in Hungary, according to the National Meteorological Service (OMSZ). The mercury hit 37°C in both Baja and Kübekháza, in southern Hungary, on Wednesday, OMSZ said on Facebook.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Hungary on Aug. 17, before today, had been 36.8°C in Pécs, in the south, in 1946.

Forecasts show daytime temperatures rising as high as 39°C on Thursday and 40°C on Friday.

The chief medical officer has issued a highest-level heat alert from Wednesday until Friday midnight.
