Balaton Cyclists Route Completed
State secretaries Bálint Nagy for transport and Máriusz Révész for active Hungary opened the last section of a bicycle route encircling Lake Balaton yesterday in Balatonrendes.

Cyclists can now circumnavigate the lake on a 205km route in bicycle paths or public roads suitable for cycling.

The cabinet decided to upgrade the entire circle in 2017, but when the project reached Zánka, the plan hit local resistance, as many people feared for the peace of the streets close to the shore used as a promenade.

The Balaton cycle route was marked out in the early 2000s. Due to various legal disputes a short section was left out of the route around the lake. Cyclists had to detour to route 71 for two decades because of these disputes.
