Magyar Posta to Cut Services
Economy Development Minister Márton Nagy filed an amendment to the Postal Service Act that will reduce the range of services provided by Magyar Posta.

The compulsory services to be provided by the company will shrink to the delivery of parcels up to 10kg, in line with EU regulations, down from the present 20kg.

In addition, Magyar Posta will be required to maintain branches for every 30,000 inhabitants, up from the present 25,000.

The proposal argues that the changes are necessary due to the transformation of consumer habits, as the number of postal items delivered by deposit has fallen by 30% in the last three years.

On the other hand, delivery to an automated device, based on a contract signed by the consumer with the company, will be equal on legal terms to delivery in hand.

In other cutbacks, Magyar Posta is notifying publishers that the sale of newspapers in post offices will be discontinued from May 31, “due to the rationalisation of operations”, Magyar Hang reports.

This decision will end the sale of more than 600 publications at 546 post offices, Magyar Hang adds.

Magyar Posta stopped delivering daily newspapers in July 2021. Since then, Médiaworks has taken over this task.

According to reports, shops in post offices will also be closed, so chocolate bars or other products will not be available.

After the changes, Magyar Posta will provide only traditional postal services.
