Foreign 'Guest Worker' Community in Hungary Rises to 81,000
The number of guest workers in Hungary rose by 14% to 81,000 in 2022, the Central Statistics Office reports.

Within that total, the number of Ukrainian workers grew by 24% or 5,200, to 26,000.

There were approximately 8,000 guest workers from each of Romania and Slovakia, and slightly more than 5,000 from China.

They were followed by Serbia, Vietnam, India, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Russia, the Philippines and Mongolia.

The influx of Ukrainians slowed down in the second half, while the number arriving from some non-EU countries, such as the Philippines and India, increased.

The number of guest workers expanded from 50,000 at the beginning of 2019 to 60,000 by the end of that year, followed by a decrease during the coronavirus pandemic.

As restrictions were lifted and the economy recovered, workers from more and more countries were allowed to come into Hungary under more relaxed conditions.

At the same time, after the pandemic, companies quickly ran into the limits of the domestic labour shortage again.
