Potato Scandal: Retailers in Hungary Object to Fines on 'Missing Products'

Retailers are protesting that the consumer protection authority is fining them for not having fixed-priced products in shops even when suppliers cannot provide them, as is currently the case with potatoes, the Retail Association (OKSZ) announced.
A sufficient quantity of potatoes is not available in Hungary or in the EU, as last year’s produce has already been sold, and new potatoes are still growing.
There is also a disagreement between the consumer protection authority and retailers on placing price-capped products on shelves: the authority expects the retailer to stock the required amount for the morning opening, but the OKSZ says this would mean that fixed-price products would not be available to shoppers in the afternoon.
