Hungary and Slovakia together have prevented the approval of the latest European Union sanctions package, the foreign minister said after a meeting of the EU foreign affairs council in Brussels on Monday, adding that they protested against plans to ban the purchase of cheap Russian gas and crude.
The European Commission on Wednesday launched infringement procedures against Hungary over mandatory markup caps on a range of food and non-food products the government introduced to counter inflation.
It is in Hungary's strategic interest for ties with Canada to be as close as possible, Levente Magyar, the foreign ministry's state secretary, said in Toronto, noting that Canada, the world's second largest country, has "vast reserves of untapped natural reserves and potential for energy production".
A demonstration was held "for free public life, Western-type societal development and the saving of Hungary" organised by publicist Robert Puzsér in Budapest.
