Budapest Boat Tragedy: Remembering the Victims
A memorial corner is being established to honour the victims of the Hableány disaster of 2019, in which 25 South Korean tourists and two Hungarian crew members drowned after a sightseeing boat sank near Margaret Bridge.

To mark the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, János Hajdu, Director-General of the Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK), joined other officials to lay wreaths near the crash site.

He announced the setting up of a permanent memorial at the same spot: “There was a strong desire to create such a memorial place here, which is also important… for all those who participated in the rescue”.

Seven South Korean tourists survived the crash, in heavy rain amid strong currents. One is still listed as missing.

Hajdu went on to say that the investigation of the boat had concluded, and its dismantling had begun. Several parts will be placed at the memorial corner as a symbolic gesture.

He mentioned that during the process, a tree had sprouted from the hull of the boat, which was recently planted at the TEK headquarters, where “it will continue to grow”.
