Hungarians Show a Preference for Croatia Over Lake Balaton

Data from the Szallas accommodation booking website reveals a decline in domestic summer reservations compared to the previous year. Domestic bookings via Szallas have dropped by 15% compared to last year, with a 3.7% decrease compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic.
Hungarians booking overnight stays within Hungary have decreased by 17.7% year-on-year and by 6.7% compared to 2019. Gross intermediated room rate revenue also dipped slightly, falling just over 3.5% compared to 2022.
SZEP card payments have seen a slight increase, with 23.2% of guests using this payment method this year, compared to 22.9% the previous year. The average price per person per night was Ft 12,000, reflecting a 17% increase compared to 2022.
This year, a larger proportion of people opted for shorter stays of one or two nights, accounting for 57.7% of summer bookings on the website, up from 56.2% the previous year and 56.5% in 2019. Bookings were distributed among various types of accommodation, with one-third in apartments, 27% in hotels, 22% in guesthouses, 14% in pensions, and 6% in other accommodations.
On the other hand, bookings in Croatia have increased by 10%, and the number of nights spent by Hungarians in Croatia has risen by 7% this summer, with the potential for further improvement in September.
Among Hungarians, the most favored Croatian destinations included Vir, Crikvenice, Njivice, Bibinje, and Vodice. The average price per person per night in Croatia was Ft 13,600, marking a 19% increase compared to 2022.
