Domestic Tourism in Hungary Down 19% - Most Popular Cities Revealed
Hungary’s largest online accommodation booking site, Szallas.hu, has registered a 19% decline in reservations this summer compared to the record 2022 season, despite rising demand in July.

The 2023 summer bookings are slightly below the 2019 figures.

Within regions, Lake Balaton remains the top destination, accounting for a third of all bookings.

In the ranking of cities, Siófok was followed by Hajdúszoboszló, Budapest, Eger, and Gyula.

Accommodation prices at Lake Balaton were 15.8% higher than a year ago, slightly below price growth seen at Lake Tisza.

In related news, the Economic Development Ministry announced on Monday that the government has raised the threshold for SZÉP voucher cards, which enjoy lower tax rates, from Ft 450,000 to Ft 650,000.

In a recent change, the holiday voucher cards can also be used for the purchase of foodstuffs.

Tourism agency MTÜ had lobbied to have the introduction of the measure postponed until September, or after the peak summer holiday season.
