Budapest Professors Plead for Salary Increase

Instructors of the Budapest Technology University (BME) demand higher wages in an open letter signed by 762 employees, and published.
The letter denounces the university's insufficient support for high-quality education, research, fair salaries, and student benefits.
According to a text attached to the letter, the basic salary of university lecturers is not close to the average salary of a graduate engineer.
It also states that an assistant professor's gross monthly basic salary with a Ph.D. is near Ft 280,000.
Senior assistant professors receive a gross monthly salary of Ft 540,000, while Ph.D. students receive stipends of Ft 140,000 a month for the first two years and Ft 180,000 for the next two.
By comparison, the national net median wage was Ft 342,800 in December, 444 adds.
The signatories demand an immediate minimum 50% increase in guaranteed basic salaries for all positions, as well as a review of salary scales for teachers, researchers, and civil servants.
