Organised by the Korean Cultural Centre, the festival offers expats a chance to explore the breadth of contemporary South Korean filmmaking, with a programme ranging from romantic comedy to mystery thrillers.

The programme is divided into four sections: Fresh, Faces, Focus and Extra. The Focus section explores the road movie genre, with stories centred on journeys, family relationships and personal transformation. One particularly unusual entry is 3 Gen. Journey, which follows three generations travelling by electric car from Gwangju to Budapest over 80 days.

The Extra section features five films selected with the Jeonju International Film Festival, including the documentary Horoomon, which explores the identity and experiences of Korea’s minority community in Japan through the history of a popular Japanese dish.

The festival opens with The King’s Warden, a historical drama set in Joseon-era Korea. The film has already attracted more than 16 million cinema-goers in South Korea, making it the country’s second most-watched film of all time and its highest-grossing production, according to the Korean Cultural Centre.

For something more supernatural, Holy Night: Demon Hunters follows three people with special abilities who take on a devil-worshipping criminal organisation. The festival’s closing film, My Daughter is a Zombie, takes a lighter approach to the undead genre, telling the story of a father who hides his zombie daughter in the countryside and tries to teach her how to live like a human again.

The festival will also gives the opportunity to meet Korean filmmakers in person. Directors Song Jinuk, Jang Kunjae and Lee Seonyeon will take part in CineTalk audience events on 26 and 27 September.

Tickets cost HUF 2,600, with discounted tickets for students and pensioners priced at HUF 2,000. Sales begin on 10 September online and at the Corvin Cinema box office.
