Cinefest in Hungary Marks 20 Years With Celebrated Filmmakers’ Latest Works, 6 - 14 September
The 20th CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival is set to be a celebration of both history and contemporary cinema. This year’s festival highlights the return of acclaimed filmmakers who have previously been featured at CineFest, including Sean Baker, Hajdu Szabolcs, and Yorgos Lanthimos.

Sean Baker’s “Anora” Returns in Grand Style

Sean Baker, a prominent figure in independent cinema, returns to CineFest with his latest film “Anora.” Known for his previous works like “Tangerine” and “Red Rocket,” Baker‘s new film, which debuted at Cannes and won the Palme d’Or, tells the story of a young Brooklyn sex worker who marries an oligarch’s son, creating a blend of familial conflict and comedy. Baker‘s unique narrative style and social relevance ensure that “Anora” will be a standout at the festival.

Hajdu Szabolcs Concludes His Trilogy

Hungarian director Hajdu Szabolcs, a familiar name at CineFest, returns with “One Percent Indian,” the final installment of his relationship trilogy. Following the success of “White Palms” and “Ernelláék Farkaséknál,” Szabolcs‘ new film delves into the lives of three old friends reunited by a death, each grappling with societal changes and personal challenges.

The film promises to be a poignant exploration of friendship and social dynamics. Additionally, the first two films in the trilogy will be screened in an outdoor setting, providing a comprehensive experience for viewers.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness”

Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film “Poor Things” premiered at last year’s CineFest and went on to win four Oscars, returns with his new film “Kinds of Kindness.” Featuring an ensemble cast including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, and Hunter Schafer, Lanthimos‘ latest work presents a bizarre, three-part narrative that continues his tradition of blending dark humor with profound storytelling. “Kinds of Kindness” is expected to be a major highlight of the festival, showcasing Lanthimos‘ distinctive cinematic vision.

Festival Atmosphere and Anticipation

The 20th CineFest is not just a retrospective but also a celebration of the future of cinema. Festival director Tibor Bíró emphasized the significance of looking back at the festival’s journey while also showcasing the latest works of filmmakers who have grown with CineFest. The festival’s unique blend of past and present promises to offer an enriching experience for both filmmakers and audiences, cementing its status as Hungary‘s premier international film festival.
