MSZP: 40% of Society Lives Below Subsistence Minimum in Hungary
Forty percent of society, 3.8 million people, live at or below the subsistence level, the deputy chairman of the Socialist Party (MSZP) said at a press conference in Budapest.

Referring to their own calculations, Lajos Korózs said that a single-person household needs about 190 thousand forints to survive, and a single-person pensioner household needs 170 thousand forints to survive.

He added that a two-parent household with two children must have a net income of around 550,000 forints to be considered to be living an average life.

He emphasised that the Central Statistical Office (KSH) has not calculated the subsistence minimum since 2015, while an organization called Policy Agenda has performed this calculation on behalf of the KSH for years.

He explained the methodology of their calculations, saying that they calculated based on statistical estimates, weighting consumption, using data on food consumption, just as the Central Statistical Office had previously done.

The opposition politician also reported that the MSZP is launching a pension consultation, asking this social group, among other things, what they think about the technique of pension increases, the current situation of healthcare, and the fact that they receive vouchers from the government instead of cash.

Pál Belyó, former president of the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and professional leader of the subsistence minimum calculation, said that the calculations were based on KSH data and its previous methodology.

They looked at how certain segments of the population consume and how the income of these segments develops, he explained.
