Why has Public Prosecutor Moved to Lift Immunity of Six MPs in Hungary?
- 15 Jul 2025 6:22 AM
The lawmakers in question are under investigation for misdemeanors related to the use of pyrotechnics, minor traffic law violations and the abuse of the right of assembly at various demonstrations this past April, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
It noted that when it comes to misdemeanor cases, lawmakers are free to waive their own immunity. If they refuse, the investigation can only go forward if parliament lifts their immunity.
Gabor Balint Nagy, the chief public prosecutor, has initiated the suspension of the immunity of six lawmakers in connection with nine misdemeanor cases.
