Hungary Ranks Among EU Leaders in Home Ownership, Eurostat Finds
Hungary ranks among the top EU countries for home ownership, with 91.6% of households living in owner-occupied homes in 2024, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

That is more than 23 percentage points above the EU average, placing Hungary just behind Romania and Slovakia, and slightly ahead of Croatia at 91%.

Despite the high ownership rate and relatively better housing overcrowding metrics compared to neighboring countries, challenges remain.

“Hungary is basically rich in housing and poor in cash,” said Tamás Boros, director of the Balance Institute, on Telex’s program Hungary in the Future. The housing crisis has become increasingly severe across much of the EU in recent years, prompting varied policy responses by governments.

Eurostat defines an owner as someone who holds a title deed to their home, regardless of mortgages or loans, and counts a home as owner-occupied if at least one resident owns it.
