Art & Antique Fair @ Bálna Budapest, Now on Until 9 February
- 6 Feb 2025 11:29 AM

Chief organiser Ádám Tausz said at Wednesday's press conference that about 50 people worked on the stands, which have been under construction for ten days, and 70 tons of wood were used in the construction. He said that they aimed to have several classical galleries participate in the fair with a diverse offering in addition to contemporary ones.
This year, they were made with a wider range of art materials: in addition to works of fine art, the fair also includes antique books, jewelry, and furniture, and you will also be able to find antiques from the 1300s.
According to Gábor Tausz, Art and Antique gives an impression of where the Hungarian art market is today.
Péter Nemes, owner of the Nemes Gallery, recalled that the Art and Antique fair, which has a 30-year history , "grew up together with the modern Hungarian art trade" , thus always having a decisive role.
The fair's regular visitors include collectors and dealers, art historians and museologists, as well as the art-loving public.
Compared to previous years, the audience will be able to see one of the most diverse and colorful selections at this year's event. Péter Nemes explained this by saying that the competition between galleries and market players is increasing. The competition to acquire each object helps us to present increasingly high-quality material year after year, he said.
At the press conference, the exhibitors' representatives presented a special item from their selection. Lajos Moró, owner of Moró Antik on Falk Miksa Street, said that they will be exhibiting the hussar sabre of Major General Károly Vécsey, the martyr of Arad, at their stand.
According to his description, after the execution of Károly Vécsey, the sabre was looked after by the family, and then it was loaned to the Museum of Military History for an exhibition organized for the 150th anniversary of the suppression of the War of Independence. Then - after lying dormant - the weapon was rediscovered a month and a half ago - said Lajos Moró.
György Márffy, the head of the Central Antiquarian Bookstore, said: this year they will be participating in the fair with more than 100 antique books, manuscripts, and maps. At their stand, visitors can choose from signed books, early prints, and old Hungarian prints from the 13th century to Attila József.
György Márffy drew attention to the Latin prayer book written in the late 1200s and early 1300s, which lists the lives of saints and presents daily prayers. He added that additions were added to the beginning and end of the codex, handwritten on parchment, in the 15th century.
According to György Márffy, it deserves special attention from a Hungarian perspective that Saint Elizabeth of the Árpád dynasty, who died young, was included among the saints in the prayer book.
