Classical Music: New Year Starts in Budapest with Works by Romantic Composers, Performed by Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra

Mozart's Serenade in B flat major, Massenet's orchestral oratorio excerpt from The Virgin's Last Dream and Schönberg's string sextet The Glorious Night make up the repertoire of the National Philharmonic Orchestra's first concert this year, which will be conducted by György Vashegyi, the orchestra said in a statement.
The opening composition of the concert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade in B flat major, written for thirteen instruments, or as it is often called, the Gran Partita, creates a special effect in a symphonic concert program, as in addition to two oboes, two clarinets, two bass horns, four horns and two bassoons, only one double bass represents the strings.
Romantic Jules Massenet's piece The Virgin's Last Dream (Le dernier sommeil de la Vierge) is a real speciality, as the orchestral movement is the most popular excerpt from the oratorio The Virgin (La Vierge), by the French composer, who is mainly known for his operas, and which tells the story of Mary's Assumption into Heaven.
The closing number of the concert is Arnold Schönberg's symphonic poem "Glorified Night" (Verklärte Nacht), inspired by the poem of the same name by the German poet Richard Dehmel, and depicts a dialogue between a woman and a man through music.
The woman confesses to her lover that she is carrying a child conceived by a stranger, but the man does not turn away from her because of this, but accepts the fetus as his own in the hope of a pure and beautiful life together.
Schönberg illustrates the poem, which was considered revolutionary at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with hymn-like music.
On January 21, the Liszt Academy will also host the concert titled Viennese and French Classics, featuring Julien Chauvin, world-famous French violinist and conductor, and on February 12, the ensemble will perform at Müpa Budapest, where the audience will be able to hear the rarely heard opera Psyche, a oeuvre by the French romantic composer Ambroise Thomas.
Meanwhile, Bogányi to hold world premiere at Müpa
The world premiere of the work "Introduction and variations on a theme "Boci, boci ..." written for solo piano by Kossuth and Liszt Prize-winning pianist Gergely Bogányi will be held at Müpa on January 29.

The pianist will once again play on the piano he developed himself, they added.
The announcement highlights that Gergely Bogányi is one of the most prominent figures of his generation as a pianist, whose most important competition victory was first place at the 1996 Liszt Ferenc International Piano Competition.
Gergely Bogányi's repertoire includes Chopin, all of whose works written for solo piano he performed in two days at the Müpa, but the performances of works by Liszt and Mozart also feature significantly in his oeuvre – the information sheet reads.
The Piano Series continues with a concert by Grigoriy Sokolov on April 22 at Müpa.
