Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) is an American rock band formed in 1996 by guitarist and vocalist Josh Homme.

The band emerged from the ashes of Homme's previous group, Kyuss, a pioneering stoner rock band. With QOTSA, Homme sought to blend heavy, riff-driven rock with a more refined, experimental edge.

Their music incorporates elements of hard rock, desert rock, and even hints of punk and electronic influences, setting them apart from their contemporaries.

The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1998, laid the foundation for their signature sound—hypnotic riffs, driving rhythms, and Homme's distinctive falsetto vocals. However, it was their second album, Rated R (2000), that brought them mainstream attention with hits like "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret." The album showcased their ability to mix melodic songwriting with raw, aggressive energy, earning them critical acclaim.

Their 2002 breakthrough, Songs for the Deaf, solidified their status as one of the most innovative rock bands of the 2000s. Featuring Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters on drums, the album included the massive hit "No One Knows."

Its concept, designed as a surreal road trip through the California desert, added to its mystique, making it a defining record of the era. The band’s rotating lineup, with Homme as the sole constant member, contributed to their ever-evolving sound.

QOTSA continued to push musical boundaries with albums like Lullabies to Paralyze (2005) and Era Vulgaris (2007), experimenting with darker, more atmospheric tones. Though they maintained their heavy rock roots, these albums showcased a greater emphasis on eerie melodies and intricate songwriting. Despite numerous lineup changes, the band's identity remained strong, anchored by Homme's vision and distinctive style.
 

After a six-year hiatus, they returned with ...Like Clockwork (2013), a deeply personal and critically acclaimed album featuring collaborations with Elton John, Trent Reznor, and Alex Turner. It revealed a more vulnerable side of the band, blending melancholic ballads with their signature rock intensity.

This trend continued with Villains (2017), a more groove-oriented album produced by Mark Ronson, which infused a danceable energy into their sound.
 

Queens of the Stone Age remains a powerful force in rock music, known for their hypnotic riffs, dynamic performances, and willingness to evolve.

Their latest album, In Times New Roman... (2023), returned to a heavier, rawer sound, reaffirming their place as one of modern rock’s most influential bands. Whether experimenting with new styles or doubling down on their hard-hitting roots, QOTSA continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
