Communism Turned Hungarians Against Hungarians - Memorial Day Reflection by Gov't Official
Communism's biggest sin was that it broke up communities that had lived together for centuries, Attila Fulop, state secretary for welfare policy, said, addressing the Memorial Day for the Victims of Communism in Budapest.

This "turned Hungarians against Hungarians", he said, adding, "We must never let this happen again."

At the commemoration in Gyorskocsi Street, he said Hungarians had experienced enough pain to know that it was wrong to call today's Hungary a dictatorship, "thereby relativising the suffering of people who lived in real dictatorships".

The communist dictatorship was marked by arbitrariness, a network of informants and a state apparatus that "acted inhumanly against people who expressed their opinions and sought truth".

"We cannot accept being stigmatised either in our country and abroad for our opinions or for speaking our truth," he said. "It is vitally important that we speak authentically about what communism means in everyday life," he added.

"In some parts of the world, especially in the West, communist ideas have become attractive again," Fulop insisted. "The ideologists and politicians who promote them ensnare young people, who are then attracted to an ideology without having any personal experience of it."

Such people, he said, were naive because if communism came about, they would no longer be allowed to speak the truth or express their free opinion.
