Self-Driving Cars to Hit Budapest Streets Within Weeks

These AI-controlled vehicles will be strikingly decorated so everyone recognizes them as autonomous.
The goal is to legitimize the technology in Budapest's complex traffic — unlike straight-grid US or Chinese cities — proving it works in challenging environments.
They'll complement taxi services amid driver shortages, not replace them, addressing urban transport issues as one of many applications.
Negotiations are underway on creating a large data centre, humanoid robots will be manufactured in Hungary, and a diagnostic-oncology centre will be set up, he added.
The former innovation and technology minister, who began his career as an engineer at Knorr-Bremse, was appointed AI government commissioner a year ago.
László Palkovics, serving as the Government Commissioner for Artificial Intelligence, oversees maximizing AI's benefits while mitigating its risks and threats.
His role covers leveraging AI opportunities across key sectors like education, science, economy, healthcare, agriculture, transport, national security, defense, law enforcement, energy, industry, trade, finance, public administration, and international collaboration.
He promotes AI adoption specifically in education, economy, healthcare, industry, and transport, coordinates EU AI Regulation compliance, and manages state funding for Hungarian AI R&D.
Operating as State Secretary, his duties report directly to the Prime Minister and are supported by an eight-person secretariat under the Hungarian Ministry of Energy.
