One of the most important and acclaimed contemporary pop musicians, the guitarist-singer-songwriter known as St. Vincent, Annie Clark will embark on a summer European tour titled An Intimate Performance, during which only she and her pianist, Rachel Eckroth, will perform on stage – presenting St. Vincent's songs in re-arranged, intimate versions.
Agenda for the evening:
19:00: opening of the gates
19:30-20:00: Rachel Eckroth
20:00-20:20: intermission
20:20: St. Vincent
Annie Clark made her debut as St. Vincent in 2007 with the album Marry Me and quickly became one of the most innovative and exciting figures in modern music.
Subsequent albums include Actor (2009), Strange Mercy (2011) and her untitled fourth album, which won the 2014 GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Album. Her fifth album, MASSEDUCTION, released in 2017, has also charted in the top 10 in the US and UK, and won two more GRAMMY Awards (Best Rock Song for the title track and Best Album Cover).
Released in 2021, Daddy's Home evoked the tired glamour and raw, beautifully nuanced sounds of downtown New York in the 1970s, and was a huge success, eventually winning him his second GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album. His 2021-2022 world tour, which saw him perform at legendary venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, confirmed the unrivalled power of his live performances.
Clark then began work on his seventh album, which became his first fully self-produced album (he had co-produced previous albums).
The result is All Born Screaming, winner of the third GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Album, which showcases St. Vincent at his most raw and primal.
On the album, Clark leads a "carefully selected team" through the powerful Broken Man (which won the GRAMMY for Best Rock Song), the catchy Flea (GRAMMY for Best Alternative Performance), and the grotesque Big Time Nothing, which runs through a deafening rampage of self-loathing. All Born Screaming conveys both spiritual emptiness and ecstatic acceptance.
"If you're born screaming, that's a good sign," says Clark. "Because it means you're breathing. You're alive. God, that's so joyful. It's also a protest. In a sense, we're all born protesting. It's scary to live, but it's also intoxicating. All of it together."
For An Intimate Performance, St. Vincent will be joined on stage by Rachel Eckroth, who has been a regular keyboardist for some time. Eckroth has previously worked with artists such as Rufus Wainwright and KT Tunstall, but is also an accomplished songwriter-producer in her own right, with her 2021 album The Garden nominated for a GRAMMY in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category.
Fortunately, we will get a taste of his songs before the St Vincent concert, as he will be performing separately as the opening act.
