Free Folk Dance Series at Várkert Bazár in Budapest this Summer
Set in the Neo-Renaissance Garden overlooking the Danube, this summer dance series offers a relaxed and welcoming way to experience traditional Hungarian culture in Budapest. The open-air events are designed for everyone, from experienced folk dancers to complete beginners curious to try something new.

Each evening begins with guidance from professional dance instructors, who introduce the basic steps and help newcomers feel comfortable on the dance floor.

This makes the programme accessible regardless of prior experience, while still offering an engaging atmosphere for those already familiar with folk dance traditions.

The events provide an opportunity to explore the rich musical and dance heritage of the Carpathian Basin, with live performances bringing regional styles to life.

Alongside the cultural aspect, the setting itself adds to the experience, as the garden’s panoramic views over the Danube create a distinctive backdrop for a summer evening in the city.

This season features three notable ensembles. Pál István Szalonna and Bandája present a repertoire rooted in some of the most authentic traditions of Hungarian folk music.

Stenk brings a more contemporary approach, adding fresh energy to the classic dance house format. Fanfara Complexa completes the line-up with a vibrant sound that draws on broader regional influences.

Although her life was tragically short – she lived just 27 years – Janis Joplin remains one of the most influential female artists in music history. Honouring this exceptional musical legacy, and the spirit of the blues, is the mission of Hungary’s Janis Joplin Tribute Band Hungary (formerly known as the Janis Joplin Memorial Band).
