According to the court’s statement, the suspect signed contracts with 15 agribusinesses between March and December 2025, but a substantial portion of the contracted grain products cannot be accounted for.

The estimated damage caused by the alleged activities amounts to HUF 9.9bn. The court ordered the suspect’s arrest citing the risk of flight, the potential for tampering with evidence, and the scale of the financial loss involved.

Hungarian media reports indicate that Baszna Gabona had been operating as a grain trading and storage company, working primarily with local farmers in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. Several producers reportedly failed to receive payment for delivered crops, prompting complaints and a subsequent criminal investigation.

Authorities are examining whether the company’s financial difficulties were already apparent at the time the contracts were concluded.

The government has declared the liquidation of Baszna Gabona to be of “strategic importance,” a legal classification that allows for an accelerated insolvency procedure under Hungarian law.

The measure is intended to speed up the assessment of claims and facilitate faster compensation for affected farmers and suppliers.
 

The criminal investigation remains ongoing.
