Hungary Joins European Helpline for Victims of Crime – Support Available in English
Hungary has officially joined the European Helpline for Victims of Crime, now accessible by dialling 116-006, the Ministry of Justice announced in Budapest.

At a press conference, Justice Minister Bence Tuzson said that while the judiciary has traditionally focused on identifying and prosecuting perpetrators, the government recognised that this alone is not sufficient.

“It is not enough for crime to be punished – victims must also receive help,” he stated, outlining the development of a comprehensive victim support system in Hungary.

Growing Trust in Victim Support Services

Although the number of recorded crimes in Hungary has declined in recent years, the number of people seeking assistance from victim aid centres has significantly increased. According to Tuzson, around 35,000 people turned to such services in 2024, rising to approximately 45,000 in 2025.

“This shows that the system works and that people trust it,” the minister said.

Tackling Online Fraud

Addressing the growing issue of online fraud, Tuzson noted that these cases are often complex and difficult to investigate. In response, the government has introduced a comprehensive legislative package. As a result, authorities have already recovered HUF 3.8 billion (approximately EUR 10 million) from criminals.

Helpline Available in English

Nóra Király, Government Commissioner for Victim Aid Centres, highlighted that Hungary has operated a national victim support helpline for a decade at 06-80-225-225.

From now on, both the Hungarian national number and the European short code 116-006 will operate simultaneously.

Importantly for expats and foreign residents, the 116-006 helpline is available in English, offering information, emotional support, and guidance on victims’ rights, legal options, and available services.

The service is free of charge and can be contacted from anywhere in Hungary.
