Zelensky has 'Directly Entered' Hungary's Election Campaign, Claims Orbán
- 17 Feb 2026 7:16 AM
Over the past week, political attacks from Ukraine rose to a new level, Orban said in the post.
"When President Zelensky attacks me personally because we don't support Ukraine's expedited EU accession, he actually questions the sovereign decision of the Hungarian people," the prime minister said.
Orban noted that Hungarians made it clear in the Voks2025 survey that they did not want Ukraine to become a member of the European Union.
"As the prime minister of Hungary, it is my duty to enforce the decision of the Hungarian people. And I will do this, again and again. Whether President Zelensky likes this or not," Orban concluded his post.
Orbán Claims "brutally open" election interference in Hungary by Ukraine
"Ukraine and their president have openly interfered with Hungary's election campaign," Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a press conference held together with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Budapest on Monday.
Such "brutally open" interference with another country's election campaign "does not happen too often," the prime minister said, but added that though the election was of primary importance for Hungarians "it will have an impact outside Hungary".
"The Ukrainians rightfully attribute a significance to what kind of government Hungary will have," he said.
One option he said was "that of the Hungarian people who have ... clearly expressed their refusal to allow Ukraine to enter the European Union".
"We are convinced that such a move would drag us into the war and it would destroy our economy," Orban said.
"They also know that we will not give Brussels money for them to send it to Ukraine," the prime minister added.
The other option "which Ukraine would prefer" is a government "seeking or at least consenting" to Ukraine's EU membership ... "they want a government that would contribute to Ukraine's finances, that is send money to Ukraine," Orban said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine crisis - 4,066 Ukrainian citizens enter Hungary on Sunday
Fully 4,066 Ukrainian citizens crossed into Hungary on Sunday, according to the national police headquarters (ORFK).
Police issued temporary residence permits valid for 30 days to 18 people, ORFK said.
