Vasarely 120: Major Retrospective of Op-Art Pioneer at Budapest Fine Arts Museum
On display until 16 August. If you've ever found yourself captivated by a geometric painting that seemed to shift or pulse as you looked at it, you've had a 'Vasarely experience'. Now the world’s most famous optical artist, a Hungarian, is being celebrated in a comprehensive retrospective deserving of his art legacy.

Starting May 15, the Szépművészeti Múzeum will host VASARELY 120, a significant show for the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Hungarian-born master of 'Op-Art'.

Running until August 16, it offers expats here an ideal opportunity to retreat from the summer heat into the halls of one of the city’s most prestigious cultural landmarks.

Op-Art Daddy Origins

Born in Pécs in 1906, Vasarely began his artistic studies in Budapest before moving to Paris, where he redefined the boundaries of visual perception. His work goes beyond traditional painting; it creates movement and depth that challenge the brain’s interpretation of space.

As the founding figure of the Op-Art movement, his influence remains pervasive in modern culture. From iconic corporate branding and vintage album covers to contemporary digital art and architecture, Vasarely’s focus on geometric abstraction fundamentally shaped post-war visual aesthetics.

What to Expect?

This presentation is remarkable for its scale and historical depth. The collection features over 140 artworks, supplemented by personal documents, rare film footage, and previously unreleased photographs. Museum officials note that the sheer completeness of this retrospective is unprecedented in Hungary’s exhibition history.

The core of the exhibition draws from the dedicated Vasarely Museums in both Budapest and Pécs. These are further enhanced by significant loans from the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, France.

This international collaboration allows visitors to follow the artist's full trajectory: from his early figurative works created in Hungary to the bold geometric experiments of his time in Paris, culminating in the globally recognized optical-kinetic masterpieces that secured his place in art history.

Walk Through His Kinetic Career

Curated by Veronika Pócs and Mónika Zombori, the exhibition is organized both chronologically and thematically. It serves as a guided journey through the artist's evolving mind. The experience begins with his earlier, more grounded Hungarian period and moves into his transition toward abstraction in Paris.

The final sections highlight his emergence as a pioneer of kinetic art, showcasing the vibrant, moving compositions that made him a household name.

Shared Art Anniversary

The timing of this show is particularly symbolic, as 2026 also marks the 120th anniversary of the Museum of Fine Arts itself. This coincidence creates a double celebration of Hungarian cultural heritage, honoring both the artist and the institution that has introduced generations of residents and visitors to the world of fine art.
