Magyar: Tisza Govt Won't Use Castle District Palace as PM's Office
- 17 Apr 2026 7:51 AM
The current Prime Minister's Office moved into the former Carmelite monastery complex in January 2019.
Magyar made the announcement following a meeting with President Tamás Sulyok, and framed the move as part of a broader shift in governance style.
The relocation would mark a return to the pre-2019 practice, when Hungarian prime ministers typically worked in or near the Parliament building rather than in the Buda Castle District.
The Carmelite complex became a defining symbol of Viktor Orbán’s tenure after he moved his office there, a decision originally taken in 2014 and implemented after extensive renovations completed in 2019.
Magyar has previously suggested that, in the event of a change in government, the historic building could be opened to the public, although no detailed plans or timeline have yet been confirmed.
The move is widely seen as a symbolic break with the previous administration and part of a broader effort by the incoming Tisza government to signal institutional and political change following its election victory.
