Organized by the Városi Platform (Urban Platform), this year's initiative encourages residents and expats alike to look up, notice the intricate details of the capital's facades, and explore the stories behind its most beautiful buildings.

The multi-day celebration will feature open-house building tours, specialized urban walks, thematic exhibitions, and expert-led discussions across various neighborhoods in the capital, offering a rare look inside some of Budapest’s turn-of-the-century landmarks.

Spotlight Event: Art Nouveau Cavalcade in Kőbánya

While events are popping up citywide, a standout family-friendly celebration is taking place over the weekend on Saturday, June 13.

The Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Kőbányai Kulturális Központ is hosting a dedicated "Art Nouveau Cavalcade" (Szecessziós Kavalkád) at their local history venue on Füzér utca.

Kőbánya holds a surprisingly rich Art Nouveau heritage—influenced by legendary architects like Ödön Lechner, Frigyes Feszl, and Imre Steindl—where the style was treated not just as decoration, but as a completely fresh way of looking at urban spaces.

The free event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and includes a diverse lineup of cultural activities:

10:30 a.m. – Opening of the "Örök tavasz" (Eternal Spring) art exhibition at the local Szent László Grammar School.
11:00 a.m. – An interdisciplinary roundtable discussion exploring the Art Nouveau movement from various artistic and historical angles.
12:00 p.m. – A mini-concert of period-appropriate melodies performed by students of the Kroó György Music School.
12:30 p.m. – A dedicated film screening focusing on the architectural legacy of Ödön Lechner.

The venue's courtyard will host continuous family programs throughout the morning, including creative workshops, a giant bubble garden, bouncy castles, and henna painting. To keep with the festive spirit, all attendees will be treated to a complimentary Art Nouveau-inspired "twist" ice cream during lunchtime.

How to Participate

Because many of the guided walking tours and specific building walkthroughs organized through the main Építészet Éjszakája platform require pre-registration due to capacity limits, checking the schedule early is highly recommended.

Whether you join an organized tour through District VI or VII, visit the permanent collections at the Róth Miksa Memorial House, or head out to the family day in District X, it is an ideal opportunity to connect with the unique visual identity that defines the streets of Budapest.

Over 70 domestic and international programmes mark World Art Nouveau Day

For the first time this year, Varosi Platform is organising a nationwide festival to mark World Art Nouveau Day, bringing together fully 74 events across Budapest, four regional cities, and Subotica in Serbia. The five-day series of events will run from Wednesday to Sunday.

The festival, which offers a record number of programmes, aims to bring architecture closer to the public and showcase the rich heritage of Art Nouveau not only to professionals but also to the wider audience, organisers told MTI on Monday.

The programme includes guided walks, building tours, lectures, exhibitions, discussions, and cultural events.

A special feature of this year's festival is that buildings not usually open to the public -- or only rarely so -- will welcome visitors. One such example is the Dob Street Primary School, a unique relic of Budapest’s Art Nouveau school architecture.

"Every day, we walk past buildings that hold extraordinary stories. World Art Nouveau Day gives us the chance to discover these treasures and connect more deeply with the city we live in," the statement quoted Krisztina Bihar, founder of Varosi Platform, as saying.

The festival's events present the world of Art Nouveau from multiple perspectives. In his lecture Art Nouveau as I See It, art historian Peter Fertoszogi offers a personal take on the era through objects associated with the period.

At the former Ballet Institute, experts involved in the building's renovation, including designers and restorers, will provide insights into the secrets of its reconstruction.

The Pushkin Cinema will host a film history walk titled Lechner Odon and the Youth, while the Academy of Music will offer a concert combined with a building tour to highlight its Art Nouveau features.

The festival is not limited to Budapest: among the regional venues, Szeged will feature a walk titled Szeged's Art Nouveau Wonders - The Legacy of Ede Magyar, revisiting one of the city's most significant architectural periods. From across the border, Subotica (Szabodka), renowned worldwide for its Art Nouveau heritage, will also participate, organisers noted.

Varosi Platform's long-term goal is to foster dialogue between architecture, the city, and its residents, and to present architectural values in an accessible way, shaping our everyday environment, the statement said.
