The government represents the same stance publicly as it does in negotiations, "unlike French diplomacy, which continuously negotiates with the Russians behind closed doors," he added.

The minister was reacting to a post by his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, who accused the Hungarian government of "a betrayal of the solidarity that is required among members of the European Union".
 

In his response in a ministry statement, Szijjarto said pragmatic and transparent diplomacy characterised Hungarian-Russian relations, unlike French diplomacy behind behind closed doors.

"So please spare us the double standards and refrain from interfering in the Hungarian elections," he added.
