Generali Night Run in Budapest, 29 August
Budapest is undeniably breath-taking by day, but when the sun goes down and the city’s architectural masterpieces illuminate along the Danube, it transforms into an entirely different world.

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, fitness enthusiasts, casual joggers, and international expats will have the unique opportunity to experience the capital’s stunning nocturnal landscape on foot during the 13th annual Generali Night Run Budapest.

This year, organizer Maratonman Triatlon Kft. is elevating the long-standing tradition. Moving beyond a simple evening race, the event is expanding into a full, day-to-day festival of sport based at the Műegyetem Rakpart (University Embankment) on the Buda side, featuring an absolute highlight: the long-awaited return of the Danube Cross-Swimming event.

Whether you want to challenge your personal best or simply jog through a sea of headlamps with the illuminated Parliament building as your backdrop, here is what you need to know about the capital's ultimate late-summer sports festival.

A Full Day of Sport: Swimming, Streetball, and Kids' Runs

While the classic night runs remain the main attraction, the Műegyetem Rakpart will buzz with energy from sunrise.

The festivities kick off early at 8:00 AM on Saturday with the classic Half Marathon (21.1 km) and its multi-runner relay categories, designed for those who prefer to tackle their distance under the morning sun.

Throughout the morning and afternoon, the embankment transforms into an open-air sports village:

The Return of the Danube Cross-Swim: In cooperation with the Open Water Tournament, swimmers will once again have the rare, heavily secured opportunity to swim across the Danube River in the downtown area right by the Liberty Bridge.

Afternoon Action: The promenade will feature a fast-paced streetball championship, live sports demonstrations, and the deeply popular Kölyök Körök (Kids' Rounds) family races, offering 1km to 3km distances for children aged 6 to 14 starting from 7:10 PM.

The Main Event: Racing Under the Stars

As twilight falls, the true magic of the Night Run begins. At 8:30 PM, the first wave of evening runners will cross the start line.

The route is famously scenic, taking runners along the Buda embankments, offering panoramic views across the river. Participants will race through the historic Castle District, sprint through the iconic Buda Castle Tunnel (Alagút), and pass right past the glowing Chain Bridge.

With a strict overall cap of 5,000 participants to ensure safety and a comfortable running space on the roads, runners can choose from three evening categories:

Race Category Scheduled Start Time Unique Feature
6 km Evening Run 20:30 (8:30 PM) Perfect for beginners; a fast, flat loop on the lower embankment.
Manna ABC 11 km 21:50 (9:50 PM) A mid-distance challenge under the vibrant city streetlights.
11 km Headlamp Run 22:10 (10:10 PM) The ultimate atmosphere; a sea of runners wearing personal headlamps (fejlámpa).

The entire night wraps up late with the Night Bike event, letting cyclists claim the car-free embankments after the runners have crossed the finish line.

Why It Appeals to the Expat Community

For the international community living in Budapest, the Night Run serves as the quintessential summer-closing social event.

Aside from beating the intense daytime heat of late August, the race swaps sterile athletic tension for a vibrant, party-like atmosphere complete with rhythmic music checkpoints along the route, enthusiastic cheering crowds, and specialized pacers to help you maintain your ideal tempo.

Every single runner who crosses the finish line receives a uniquely designed finisher's medal and an official event technical shirt.

Tip: Registration is already open on the official Maratonman platform. Early-bird registration offers significant discounts, and given the strict 5,000-person limit across the evening categories, securing your spot early is highly recommended.
