Judges to Have Greater Say in Choosing Top Court & Judicial Heads in Hungary
Judges will have a greater role in deciding who leads the Kuria, Hungary's supreme court, and the National Judicial Office (OBH), the prime minister said on Monday.

"No one -- neither the Venice Commission, nor Brussels, nor Strasbourg -- should have any objections to this," Peter Magyar told a press conference.

Magyar also said the constitution would be amended to include provisions for the potential recall of the leaders of the Kuria and the OBH, arguing that the current constitution did not fully address this issue.

Magyar: Constitutional Court judges to elect their own president

Speaking at a press conference on Monday after announcing new constitutional amendment proposals in parliament, Prime Minister Peter Magyar noted that among the slated measures were restoring the right of Constitutional Court judges to elect their own president and reinstating the 70-year age limit for judges.

Magyar said the change could affect 4-5 current judges, including the top court's head, Peter Polt, so "by September, the Constitutional Court will certainly have a new president, and Peter Polt will lose his immunity."

He added that the court's powers would be expanded while the number of cardinal laws would be significantly reduced, because "the Orban government in its final years packed almost everything into cardinal laws to tie the hands of future governments if they lacked a two-thirds majority."

The prime minister said many cardinal laws would be turned into ordinary laws that could be amended by a simple majority, as had been the case in the past.
