Cologne Shooter Arrested in Budapest
- 16 Jul 2026 9:35 AM
According to police.hu, German authorities alerted their Hungarian counterparts on June 10 that the suspect was believed to be hiding in the Hungarian capital.
Officers from the National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI), working with the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK), tracked down and arrested the man in Budapest's 8th district within five hours of receiving the information.
The suspect was wanted under a European arrest warrant issued by the German authorities in connection with the Cologne shooting, in which several shots were fired, leaving one person critically injured.
Hungarian police said the man was taken into custody without incident and extradition proceedings have already begun.
Under the European Arrest Warrant system, Hungary and Germany routinely cooperate in the swift transfer of suspects wanted for serious crimes, allowing judicial authorities to fast-track extradition between EU member states.
