Artists' Colony in Szentendre Celebrates 100 Years with Exceptional Exhibition
One of Hungary's most influential artistic communities is celebrating a major milestone this year, as the Old Artists' Colony in Szentendre marks its centenary with a special exhibition showcasing a century of creativity.

Founded in 1926, the Szentendre Old Artists' Colony became home to generations of painters, sculptors and graphic artists whose work helped shape modern Hungarian art.

Nestled among the picturesque streets of the Danube Bend town, the colony has long been a centre of artistic innovation and cultural exchange.

The exhibition brings together an exceptional collection of works by around 100 artists including both the colony's founding members and contemporary artists who continue its legacy today.

Visitors can explore paintings, sculptures, sketches and archival material illustrating how the artists' community evolved over the past century while remaining an important part of Hungary's cultural landscape.

The exhibition also highlights the distinctive artistic traditions associated with Szentendre, whose Mediterranean-style architecture, colourful houses and riverside setting have inspired countless artists over the decades.

The town itself has become synonymous with Hungarian visual arts and remains one of the country's most popular cultural destinations.

Alongside the artworks, visitors can discover the history of the colony through photographs, documents and personal stories, offering insight into the lives of the artists who lived and worked there across different eras of Hungary's history.

A special focus is placed on the garden - a favourite subject for many of the artists - which ranges from the colony's beautiful park with its ancient trees to Szentendre's hidden corners and, more broadly, the town itself, often depicted against sweeping natural landscapes and expansive horizons.

The special anniversary celebrations provide an ideal opportunity for expats to experience one of Hungary's most important artistic institutions.

Combined with Szentendre's galleries, museums, cafés and charming old town, the exhibition makes for an excellent day trip from Budapest.

The centenary exhibition aims to attract art lovers from across Hungary and abroad, celebrating not only the colony's remarkable past but also its continuing role in inspiring future generations of artists.
