The initiative aims to protect lives and reduce the number of serious accidents, the statement said, adding that hundreds of people died and thousands were injured in traffic accidents last year.
On the egyeztetes.kormany.hu website, anyone can express their opinion on the criminal penalties for speeding and the system for enforcing regulations.
European practice includes imposing stricter penalties on repeat offenders, it said and added that people can also express their views on whether the amount of a speeding fine should be determined in proportion to the offender's income or the value of the vehicle.
The public consultation also touches on the idea that fines imposed for traffic violations could be directly allocated to improvements that enhance road safety, it said.
