Emergency Action Planned for Wildlife as Hungary's Lake Velence Dries Out

Lake Velence’s water level could fall by around 20cm by August, according to government forecasts, leaving parts of the lake fragmented into isolated pools separated by dry land, said Zoltán Orbán, press secretary for the Ministry of the Living Environment.
He said emergency measures are already being considered to limit ecological damage.
The ministry plans to create ecological corridors by cutting through dry sections to allow wildlife to move between remaining pools.
If drought conditions persist, authorities may also begin salvage fishing to prevent large-scale fish deaths.
Officials said a full rehabilitation programme for the lake, including long-term water replenishment, remains in the planning phase, with no final decision yet taken.
