New Dynamic Electricity Pricing in Hungary Offers Savings via Smart Meters

State energy distributor MVM Next will offer customers dynamic electricity rates from January, but companies and households can opt in voluntarily from September, according to business news website Azuzlet.

Under the so-called “D rate”, electricity prices are adjusted to wholesale market prices and change in 15-minute intervals. This is advantageous for households that can schedule high-energy-need tasks such as EV charging, heat pumps, and boilers outside peak-price periods, or during 5-10 p.m., when prices are highest.

Users need a remotely readable smart meter to join, which are available only in a few homes.

Experts also advise households to check whether their internal electrical systems can handle flexible loads.

The “D” rate could suit households that exceed the annual discounted consumption threshold of around 2,500 kWh and can shift their electricity use to periods when prices are lower.
