Xpat Interview: Richard Sherwood, Former Director of Consumer Personal Unit, Vodafone
Nationality: British. Education: Graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1993 with a degree in Business and Marketing.

Professional experience: From 1993 through 2002 he worked at the marketing divisions of Communication System in the UK and at Bacardi-Martini Pacific in Australia. He joined Vodafone Australia as General Manager of Mass Markets in 2002 till 2008. Upon his return to the UK he served as Vodafone Group’s Head of Global Marketing Internet Services till 2010

From April 2010, he became the Director of the Consumer Business Unit at Vodafone Hungary responsible for Consumer Sales and Marketing.
 

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
On 9 April 2010, to take up a new job as Consumer Director at Vodafone.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
12 years in Australia. Also as a child I lived in Germany and Hong Kong.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
How beautiful Budapest was and the quality of the wines!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
An awesome meal at Klassz on Andrássy, followed by a drink in Instant. A walk all the way along Váci utca, to Parliament and Margaret Island, then spend some time in the Buda Castle.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Grilled goose liver.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Water, and ham from Vásárcsarnok.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Köszönet, because it is a way to make people feel good and it’s the name of Vodafone’s new loyalty programme

8. What do you miss most from home?
Twiglets, and family.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Acting.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Tax inspector.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Australia, visiting friends.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Puerto Rico.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The Rolling Stones, Grease, rugby.

14. What can't you resist?
Finishing a bottle of wine, once it’s open, together with my girlfriend.

Red – e.g. Bolyki Cabarnet Franc

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Homelessness

19. Buda or Pest side?
Definitely Pest
