Xpat Interview: Peter Fodor

30 years of his career was spent as a senior executive at Electrovert Inc., a start-up company that became a major force (world-wide) in the Electronic Packaging Industry and had a division that manufactured and supplied electrical components and specialty products for the construction industry. The company was sold to strategic investors.
He was involved in the elimination of the use of fluorcarbons in the electronic industry. As a consultant was involved in the turnaround of several companies in the fields of microwave measuring technology, computer aided forensic technology and Industrial Chemicals.
He came to Hungary In 1996 to join Equinox Ventures Ltd., a private equity firm as Co-Managing Director. In 2000 he became president of the Hungarian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and co-founded FastVentures, a Hungarian early-stage technology oriented Venture Capital Company. He acted as Sales Director of AnaLogic Computers, manufacturer of high speed intelligent cameras - a portfolio company of FastVentures. Currently he is Partner at FINEXT STARTUP Venture Capital Company, a member of Futureal Group Europe’s tenth largest real estate and risk capital managers.
Fodor has been a member and/or Director of Canada-Japan Business Council. Canadian Export Association, Canadian Manufacturers Association. Pacific Basin Economic Council, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, US-USSR Trade and Economic Council, The Hungarian Canadian Chamber of Commerce and The Hungarian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association. He has participated in number of Canadian Government Trade Missions.
He has given presentations, courses and written articles on: The ASEAN Countries, Marketing in Japan, Selling on the International Market, The future of the Electronic Packaging Industry, Venture Capital and Private Equity in Hungary as well as technical papers on Printed Circuit Board Assembly and most recently on Printed Circuit Board Assembly and the Environment.
1. Where did you grow up? Who said I have grown up?
I was born here in Budapest, I lived in London, Montreal, New York & Kuala Lumpur and now at the age of 73 I feel like a child again in Budapest where I can find all the games and entertainment that a child, a teen' and even an adult could need.
2. What Hungarian traditions bring back fond memories of your childhood?
The creativity - Hungarians are creative in everything they do! Sadly even in messing up the opportunities of one of the world's most beautiful city - Budapest. But because of their unique creativity Hungary does have some very exceptional features: The best (Folk, Classical and Jazz) musicians in the world, A cuisine that is second to none, Visual arts that leaves the audience breathless. Theatre (for those who can get their tongue around a language coming from Manse land) that is second to none
3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
The beauty of Budapest!!!!
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
The rear entrance of the Szechenyi, the top floor of the Alexander Bookstore on Andrassy ut, The view from Gellerthegy at night, Hosok tere, The Castle district, The Opera House, The Parliament. A subway station of the line under Andrassy ut. Depending on the social age a romkocsma (I am 73 and I love going to them)
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Too many to list - perhaps a really good Halaszle!
6. What is never missing from your kitchen?
My wife
7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
Budapest!
8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Promoting Hungary as a tourist destination!
9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?
Politician in Hungary.
10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
I have been on vacation for the past 15 years - here in Hungary!
11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
I'll stick to Hungary but will take side trips to Malaysia, New York, Montreal, Rio, Sao Paulo. If they twist my arms I will even go to Vienna and Prague to reconfirm my good fortune that I live in Budapest!
12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Film: Stalag 17 & band: The Modern Jazz Quartet
13. What can’t you resist?
Being mad at the Hungarian Government for not spreading the wonders of Hungary and the amazement of the Hungarian peoples' negative attitude towards their wonderful land....
14. Red wine or white?
I choose colors neither in human beings nor in wines I like them all!
15. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
The smile on my face that is there most of the time!
16. Book or movie?
Both
17. Morning person or night person?
That depends on the time of day and the event. Love to have breakfast in the morning and dinner at night!
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Human relations!
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Live in Buda and work and most but not all night-life in Pest
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
If you open a quarrel between the past and the present you will lose the sight of the future (Winston Churchill)
