Xpat Interview: Zachary Tipton
Zachary Tipton, born in Idaho in 1978, has been making eyewear since 2001. He refounded his current Budapest company in 2004 with his brother Zoltan. Tipton Eyeworks designs, manufactures and sells eyewear to over 170 high-end optical boutiques worldwide. The hand made frames are inspired by vinyl records and vintage 16mm film.

Their first Vinylize collection was made from old records, and today the cases are still made from 7" singles pressed under Tipton's Vinylize label. A special 2012 Olympics collection uses original 16mm footage from the 1956 Melbourne games. Much of their creations incorporate some aspect of 'upcycling'.

The company is currently housed in a 250sqm apartment overlooking the Danube. The space includes workshops, offices and a showroom with a moveable wall that reveals a bar. The styles purchased by Elton John, Flo-Rida and Lenny Kravitz can be seen here and clients also receive free prescription lenses with any purchase.
