Heatwave Outrage After Hungarians Urged to Max Out Air Con

Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Thursday slammed right-wing online outlet Vadhajtasok for inciting readers "to be wasteful and gloat".
"At a time when water management and energy experts are fighting 24/7 to prevent the collapse of the water and energy systems which the previous government has bled dry, the Vadhajtasok website roots against their homeland," he said.
Magyar reacted on Facebook to a post by the portal on Wednesday, in which Vadhajtasok called on readers to "tell your neighbours to blast your ACs from tomorrow. We called on Hungary the last time, and it was successful. The country almost broke down. From tomorrow, blast your air conditioning and freezers... Tisza voters, no air conditioning or freezer for you."
"This is [Fidesz leader] Viktor Orban's favourite 'source of gospel'. While the entire country is grappling with the latest enormous heat wave, they are showing Fidesz's new direction: the worse it goes for the country, the better for them," Magyar said.
"There is no excuse for someone ... rooting against their country in times of trouble," he said.
Magyar also thanked water, enery, health-care, social affairs, government, law enforcement, local authority and traffic employees as well as soldiers and civilians for their efforts.
Magyar thanks Hungarians for national unity in reducing energy consumption
In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Prime Minister Peter Magyar thanked Hungarians for the national unity they have demonstrated amid the current critical water and energy situation.
"Major consumers and municipalities are reporting significant reductions in electricity use between 5pm and 10pm, and the public has also cut back," he said. "Thank you for the national unity!"
