XpatLoop Interview: Markus Hilken, Director Of SAP Global Support Center Hungary
Markus Hilken was born in Germany in 1968. He began his career as a developer at a startup company in 1992, and later on went to Luxemburg, where he worked for 3 years. He joined business software maker SAP in 2001, and became director at Global Support Center Hungary in 2005. Two years ago he made a promise that he will execute a bungee jump each year. Markus is married and father of two.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
In 2001, for business reasons. I was asked to train the Hungarian colleagues locally, and not just in Vienna, where we had a support center. But two years after that we also established a support center here, based on the skilled Hungarian workforce. In 2012, we have almost 200 colleagues here- a huge growth-, and we are supporting the German-speaking countries.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I worked in Luxemburg, in Austria, but found my place in Hungary. I don’t want to be an expat any more. To be honest, I consider myself a Hungarian- based on my Hungarian family, and friends.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
There were many. For example I was told, that Hungary is a dangerous place to be, but it quickly turned out, this is not the case. Secondly, I wasn’t expecting I would settle down here. The third is, that the people are very-very creative, and this is shown in many ways.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
An “eat and drink” at Római part, a walk in the Városliget, enjoying the view from one of the Buda-Hills at night, a ride with the Yellow-metro, a Pálinka-tasting – and most likely a diet when they return back home

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Hortobágyi palacsinta and everything spiced up with Erős Pista.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Luckily, my wife takes care of the refrigerator.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
“Pillangó” is my favorite beside the “Csiribiri” which I hear a lot at home from our little children today.

8. What do you miss most from home?

For sure not the weather, but sometimes an unlimited highway and a “Currywurst” ("curried sausage").

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

As I am in “my” business since the age of 15, it is hard to imagine something else. However, something completely different like a skipper or winemaker would be a nice challenge.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?

Everything where I could not influence, meaning innovate and be creative in order to bring things forward.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
In Spain, which is a typical travel destination for a German.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Every year we are thinking of going back to Mauritius or Cuba as we enjoyed this very much.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

Falco, and I still like to listen to his music.

14. What can't you resist?
A great bungee jump.

15. Red wine or white?
Pálinka.

16. Book or movie?
Picture book for my children.

17. Morning person or night person?
Do not expect any reaction from me before the 3rd cup of coffee.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Just to name two: the lack of education, poverty.

19. Buda or Pest side?
Buda.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
My motto is: You will never stop learning.
