XpatLoop Interview Two: Stefan Englert, MD, Budapest Festival Orchestra
1. What’s been happening at work and at home since your first Xpat Interview?


At work: exciting concerts of the BFO in Budapest and abroad. I very much look forward to the celebration of the 30th Anniversary Seasons off the BFO kicking off with a brand new initiative, the Bridging Europe Festival.
At home: we are excited about the birth of our second child in August.

2. On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you with your life in Hungary, and why?
8. I am working in one of the world’s most beautiful cities for one of the world’s finest orchestra presenting Hungarian Excellence, at its best, continuing in a long standing tradition in its field yet never as good as it has been today thanks to its exciting music making and entrepreneurial approach. And, as important, I created a home with my family.

3. What’s the best party you’ve been to while in Hungary, and why?
I cannot recall any in particular but I very much look forward to the BFO season opening gala on September 15.

4. What’s your favourite drink?
Citromszörp

5. What hidden talents do you have?
I am a practical person.

6. What was the most interesting travel trip you have ever taken?
A roundtrip in Brazil in 2004. I was amazed by the beauty of the country and even more by the vitality, spontaneity and kindness of the Brazilian.

7. If you were given a wish that could come true, what would you ask for?
Giving a day more than 24 hours.

8. What’s the last book you read, and movie you watched?
Book: The House of Wittgenstein by Alexander Waugh; Movie: Winnie the Pooh with my little son

9. If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be?
“Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften”

10. What is the perfect pizza toppings combination for you?
Tomato, Mozzarella and Anchovies

11. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
Hans Castorp but only for seven days.

12. On a scale of 1 to 10 how unusual are you, and why?
As I am not particularly unusual I would give a 3. In my view I am pretty average.

13. What’s the best website you’ve ever visited, and why?
http://www.christoph-eschenbach.com. I like the combination of playfulness and clarity. And as Christoph is a friend I am always curios to see what he is doing.

14. Who do you admire the most, and why?
Albert Camus, since he described Sisyphus as prototype of the modern human being

15. What do you like best and least about living in Hungary?
I very much like the creative and vibrant atmosphere of Budapest.

16. What has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
The birth of my son. It gave my life a complete different direction and focus.

17. If you won USD 30 million, what would you do with the money?
Investing it.

18. If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
“Row, row, row your Boat”

19. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Wherever my family is. If it needs to be a certain place: Taormina

20. In ten years from now what will you be doing?
I wish to be involved in a meaningful project, bringing joy into the life of people and hope to be present at the 40th Anniversary concert of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
