Seb MacDonald, Strategy & Transformation Specialist, Former McKinsey & Company VP
Seb is a corporate strategy and transformation specialist and interim-Executive, having spent the last 14 years consulting with McKinsey & Company, KPMG and 4C Associates.

With his parents and siblings moving to Dubai whilst starting University, Seb caught the expat bug early. He met his wife Ildiko in Malta and their first daughter was born in Hong Kong, raised in Thailand - with another girl expected at the end of 2024.

They're now back in Hungary spending time with family awaiting for the next beckoning adventure! He is a globe-trotting, Magyar-English-family-man and management consultant.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

We moved at the end of 2024. My lovely wife Ildiko is originally from Neszmely and so we have taken a few months out in order to spend more time with our family back here.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?

We have had the expat bug for years! Dubai (5 years), Malta (2), Shanghai (1), Hong Kong (3), Thailand (3) and now Hungary (6 months and counting!)

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?

How much we would enjoy exploring the rest of the countryside and the many beautiful villages Hungary has to offer. A lot of the new roads across the country have also been a very pleasant surprise!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?

A night cruise on the Danube is an amazing way to see the city… Then afterwards walk up to the Fisherman’s Bastion for some dinner and then hop on a bicycle or scooter to roam around the city in search of a good sör (or 2)!

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?

Anything my mother-in-law cooks (she is a formidable chef). But if I had to choose, probably chicken paprikash with nokedli.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?

My toddler’s thieving little hands!

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?

Hupikék törpikék. (The Smurfs)

8. What do you miss most from home?

From all the places we’ve lived, it is always the people we miss the most

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

Events Management – I’ve always loved festivals and events.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?

Festival toilet cleaner.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?

Mallorca, Spain

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?

Montenegro

13. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?

I tend to graze on various tasty treats and snacks throughout the entire day. Much like a cow. In Hungary this has now extended to kolbasz which is not helping my ever-expanding waistline!

14. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

As a teen, my favourite band was Slipknot, I loved the film Plunkett and Macleane or The Matrix and I used to play a lot of rugby.

15. Red wine or white?

White to start. Red to finish.

16. Book or movie?

Book (historical fiction or high fantasy normally)

17. Morning person or night person?

I am a night person. But my daughter has decided we should all be morning people!

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

Avoiding further global escalation of conflict.

19. Buda or Pest side?

Buda

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

I have mine tattooed at the top of my leg… if we ever meet I might just tell you (or even show!)
